Aldi up for consent in Wigan

A 16,000 sq ft store off Orrell Road on part of the former Abbey Lakes Hotel complex is the supermarket giant’s proposal.

Wigan Council’s planning committee will discuss Aldi’s plans next week. The scheme has been recommended for approval by officers.

Located off Orrell Road on the border of West Lancashire, the two-acre site is nestled to the rear of the Raj Gate restaurant.

The proposal has proven popular among those who participated in the statutory consultation; of the 44 representations received, 30 were in support of the application.

The Harris Partnership is leading on design and Avison Young is advising on planning matters.

Aldi, much like its rival Lidl, is currently on a massive expansion drive. In September, the company announced a planned £1.6bn investment over the next years to open another 80 stores. Aldi currently has 1,060 stores and is aiming for 1,500 over the longer term.

By way of comparison, Tesco has around 3,000 across its large and convenience store formats.
