St Helens plot earmarked for 140 homes hits market

Sanderson Weatherall is accepting offers for a 12.5-acre site off Coronation Drive in Newton-le-Willows that is allocated for housing in the borough’s local plan.

The site was home to Red Bank, a juvenile detention facility that was operational from 1965 until its closure in 2015.

It securely housed children convicted of serious crimes and was one of three such units in the country.

St Helens Education Trust is now looking to offload the freehold of the old school site, with offers invited until 5 December.

Red Bank closed after the school was deemed no longer fit for purpose. In July 2022, the plot was allocated for housing by St Helens Council.

The plot is split across two parcels, both containing the disused Red Bank buildings.

To the north of the plot is a 70-pupil SEND school, which remains operational.
