THING OF THE WEEK
WELL PLAYED…A well that used to supply the former Britannia Brewery in Manchester has been discovered at the 24-acre Mayfield development site. The water inside has been declared safe for irrigation use and will be used to water trees at the £1.4bn scheme’s six-acre public park, currently under development. Heritage preservation and sustainability collide in one happy coincidence! We’ll drink to that.
ENGAGEMENT…Known by many as the diamond centre of the North, Prestons of Bolton closed its doors in 2016. The four-storey emporium on Bolton’s Deansgate was the go-to place for all things ring-shaped after it opened in the 1860s but having been vacant for almost five years, the 8,600 sq ft store is now up for sale with a guide price of £695,000. Fletcher CRE is marketing the property, which is handily placed to play a role in the wider regeneration of Bolton town centre.
What does @England🏴of England winning the #Euros 2020 mean to you?
Well, for our @MeadowSide_mcr development, it means renaming the Gate, a 22-storey glass building, after #England manager Gareth Southgate! #ItsComingHome

STAYING HOME…Everyone is going a bit football mad. After England’s lung-busting run to the final, the nation waits with baited breath to see if football finally comes home on Sunday. John Quinton-Barber, chief executive of strategic communications outfit Social, got into the spirit of the occasion and offered all of his staff the Monday off. Elsewhere, developer Far East Consortium pledged to change the name of a 22-storey residential tower at its Meadowside development in Manchester to Southgate, after the national team’s manager, if England beat Italy on Sunday.
INTERGALACTIC COD…When you think of Blackpool, you think of donkeys on the beach, sticks of rock and, of course, fish and chips. There are almost as many chippies in the Lancashire coastal town as there are guest houses but if you thought the door was closed to new players, you were mistaken. Papas Fish and Chips, which claims to have once sent a portion of their product into outer space, is to take over a 6,000 sq ft unit on the Promenade. The restaurant has been vacant since Las Iguanas closed late last year.
BIG WHEEL…Good news for fans of 19th century fairground attractions who also happen to live in Southport: a Ferris wheel could be constructed in Princes Park close to Marine Lake. Universal Rides, the company that owns Southport Pleasureland, has lodged an application to build the attraction, which, if approved, would stay for three years. For those with an aversion to heights, you can wait at the bottom with a calming cup of tea, as a café also forms part of the proposals. Everyone’s a winner.
BRIDGE THE GAP…A bridge-themed outdoor extravaganza is coming to Liverpool. The idea of the event, which spans three days in August and features a host of performances, is to bring people in County ward together. As part of the event, a 72 ft-long and 19 ft-high bridge will be erected on Millennium Green off Breeze Hill and communities will be encouraged to make their own bridges and share stories of bridge-building and bridge-burning, using special provided kits. Aspiring civil engineers, step this way.
