Sainsbury’s confirm interest in Carlisle site

Sainsbury's has confirmed it is submitting a planning application for a new supermarket in Caldewgate leading to Willowholme in Carlisle.

Sainsbury's interest is hoped to boost regeneration for the area and if given approval the new supermarket would be built on land bordered by Bridge Lane, Bridge Street and Byron Street.

Details of the size of the store are yet to be confirmed.

The official announcement follows Asda's confirmation they plan to build a second store in the city, possibly as big as its current branch at Kingstown.

Meanwhile, it is believed Tesco might drop plans for a third store in the city, with a 40,000sq ft store at Viaduct Estate previously suggested.
