Wrexham station and brewery plans bubble up

The Wrexham Gateway Partnership, borne out of Wrexham Council, Transport for Wales, Wrexham University, and the Welsh Government, is set to deliver an improvement project along the Mold Road corridor.

A transport hub will front onto Wrexham General Station, aiming to improve the efficiency and capacity of using interchanging transport modes such as buses and trains.

A public plaza, expected to act as a ‘welcome’ for visitors, would be landscaped and encompass the brewery.

General improvements to road infrastructure – including the activation of the Mold Road active travel enhancement scheme – and the surrounding public realm will be undertaken.

Key goals for the transport hub centre around improved efficiency, capacity, and access to and from the station.

So far, no alterations to Wrexham General Station itself have been proposed.

Wrexham Lager – the brewer now under the co-ownership of Hollywood stars Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds – has indicated it could relocate into a converted unit know as Cambrian Sheds at side of the site and install a taproom, restaurant, and add another commercial offer.

However, the consultation does state that a change in operation may not be part of the initial plans submitted to Wrexham Council.

Cllr Mark Pritchard, leader of Wrexham Council, said: “This exciting scheme will help us go from strength to strength – creating more joined-up travel options and helping to attract even more commercial investment.

“This consultation is a chance to provide feedback before plans are finalised and submitted for outline planning approval.”

Divided in two due to its scale, the Gateway scheme’s west zone considers the adjacent Kop Stand delivery at Wrexham FC as part of the programme.

Cllr David Bithell, deputy leader of Wrexham Council, added that it was “important” to “modernise and improve” transport infrastructure in the town.

Ken Stakes, the cabinet secretary for transport and North Wales, said the plans provide an “exciting opportunity to enhance Wrexham’s reputation as a leading visitor destination”.

The consultation will run from March 31 to May 7 – it can be viewed here.

More detailed outline plans will be submitted to Wrexham Council following consultation.

The building looks very unattractive and monolithic to me

By Michael Edwards

This development would be great for Wrexham, we need something to show off our heritage brewery and an excellent new train/bus station roll on. 👍🏻

It looks like a building from the 1980’s and that’s not a good look .

Demolish it now and save us money. It wouldn’t attract me to Wrexham or anywhere else.

Wrexham Station is nothing special and not worth preserving within a redevelopment
