Work underway on Lidl’s Bromborough site

Construction of a 13,500 sq ft Lidl supermarket on Thursby Road has started after planning permission was granted by Wirral Council last year.

Brown Shopfitting & Construction is the main contractor on the scheme, which would see a modern store built on a derelict plot in Bromborough, with accompanying facilities such as an in-store bakery, customer toilets and 120 car parking spaces.

There will also be two electric vehicle charging points, under the discount supermarket retailer’s plans. The scheme was scaled back and an application submitted three times before Wirral Council granted it approval last summer.

The build is expected to eight months and Lidl expects the store to open in late summer.

Lidl regional head of property Stuart Jardine said: “There’s been much anticipation for this new store in Bromborough and it’s great that we are now in a position to finally break the ground and start construction.

We would like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding while we enter this next phase of the development.”

The project is part of the company’s £1.45bn investment strategy to expand its UK portfolio. Lidl said last July it hopes to open 60 new sites each year for the foreseeable future.

Its planned North West sites include Belle Vale in Liverpool, Mocha Parade in Lower Broughton, and, most recently, Wellington Road North in Stockport.
