Whitworth/RIBA launch gallery extension competition

The Friends of the Whitworth and the RIBA Competitions Office are holding a design contest for the first stage of the £8m extension and refurbishment of the Grade II-listed Manchester art gallery.

The Heritage Lottery Fund-supported project will extend the southwest-facing side of the gallery next to Whitworth Park, adding display space and improving facilities for visitors.

A shortlist of five practices will be asked to produce concept designs and will each receive an honorarium of £5,000.

The deadline for receipt of expressions of interest is 2.00pm on Wednesday 15 July 2009.
