VIDEO | Inside Manchester Museum’s £15m transformation

Warden Construction is hard at work in the final phase of the museum renovation, gearing it up to reopen in February 2023.

The transformation is known as “hello future” and includes a new entrance and a two-storey extension designed by Purcell. Inside the extension resides an exhibition hall, South Asia Gallery and more.

Hello future kicked off with work by Kier before Warden took over the job. As part of its brief, Warden is installing a ramped entrance off Oxford Road to make the museum more accessible.

The museum’s galleries are also being reimagined to be more inclusive. A picnic area, prayer space and quiet room are also being built.

Esme Ward, Manchester Museum director, described the work as follows: “We are extending the building, making room for more joy and learning and evolving into the museum Manchester needs.

“Galleries and exhibitions will showcase the best of the museum’s historic collections, as well as addressing the urgencies of the present day,” she continued.

“We can’t wait to reopen our doors in just six months’ time. Until then, we will continue to bring updates on our progress.”
