THING OF THE WEEK
BRICKING IT… We all know that buildings typically require a lot of bricks, but the same can be said for art installations too. Now, the world’s favourite brick is coming to the Great Northern Warehouse in The Art of The Brick, which will feature almost 100 Lego sculptures, including the famous yellow Lego man. The exhibition is open until April 2020, so you’ve got plenty of time to fine tune your Lego skills before you visit.
SANTA… November 1 marks the beginning of Christmas if retailers are anything to go by, and Manchester has got in the Christmas spirit the best way it knows how to; with bees. A very Christmassy bee has appeared outside Manchester Central Library in St Peter’s Square bedecked with a Santa’s hat. Bee sure to head on over and show your Manchester patriotism at this time of year.
BACK TO SCHOOL…Remember when you’d have those frightful dreams of walking around school in your underwear? Well, the opportunity to do just that without fear of ridicule has just popped up with the opportunity to buy the Groundwork Building on Shaw Road in Oldham. The grade two-listed building opened in 1897 until 1983 when it became a performing arts centre. The school is up for auction at Pugh’s North West property auction on 3 December, and it has no reserve, so the 20,000 sq ft building could be yours for an absolute steal.
BARRED… If you’re feeling slightly too old for a Christmas Grotto, but too young to roast chestnuts on an open fire, then The Bar that Stole Christmas might fit your festive needs to a T. The winter wonderland themed bar will be opening in early December and will be the first bar opening up in Collective on Liverpool’s Seel Street. Have a mince pie and a winter warmer on us.
WALK… On 11 December, Shelter is hosting a 10km “Sleep Walk” around Manchester to take steps to fight homelessness. The path starts at St Peter’s Square at 6pm and loops around the city, and it’s all in order to raise some money for those in the middle of the national housing emergency. In the words of Shelter, “supporters will come together to brave the winter elements and make a stand against homelessness this Christmas. There’ll be entertainment and refreshments while walking in solidarity and raising much-needed funds for our vital work this Christmas.” You can sign up here.
