Tesco plans for Middlewich postponed until end of month

Plans to build a new 200,000 sq ft Tesco store in the heart of a Crewe town centre have been put on hold.

Following the creation of two new unitary authorities for east and west Cheshire, proposals for the new store on land bordering Wheelock Street, Darlington Street and St Ann's Road in Middlewich have been deferred from a Congleton Borough Council planning meeting held in March.

A spokesperson for Cheshire East Council said: "A decision will not be made on the new store until after our new southern committee meeting about the proposals has taken place, which will be held on 22 April."

Tesco has spent the last year drawing up plans for the new store.

Concerns over the design of the store and questions over Tesco's promise of improving access to Wheelock Street and ploughing up to £1m into dealing with Middlewich's traffic problems have been raised by councillors.

Cheshire East is replacing Congleton, Crewe and Nantwich, Macclesfield and Cheshire County Council.

Tesco was unavailable to comment when called by Place North West.
