Spades in the ground at £16m Burnley health scheme
Calico Homes has commenced the redevelopment of derelict land at the town’s general hospital into 90 apartments for people over 55 with extra support needs.
The £16m project is being built by Ring Stones Maintenance and Construction and is expected to complete in 2024.
Burnley Council granted Calico Homes planning consent for the scheme, named Dovestone Gardens and designed by Brock Carmichael, in February this year.
As well as apartments, the development features a community space, communal gardens, and a wellbeing hub with bistro.
Calico is working with partners from East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust, Burnley Council, the University of Central Lancashire, Lancashire County Council and Homes England on the project.
“This development, which is the first of its kind for the area, will bring much-needed extra-care accommodation for people who need homes with additional support and safety,” said Helen Thompson, executive director of operations for the Calico Group.
Cllr John Harbour, Burnley Council’s executive member for housing and development control, added: “It’s wonderful to see work start on this extra care accommodation that will make a massive difference to so many people’s lives.
“Not only will this new exciting development allow people to continue to live independently with the help and support they need, it will also refresh and regenerate an area of the hospital that was looking tired and neglected.”
Identity Consult is the project manager and quantity surveyor for the project.
