Salford rubber stamps Media City car park plan
The authority has given consent for the creation of 710 car parking spaces on land between Broadway and the Manchester Ship Canal in Salford.
A surface level car park providing 162 spaces and a three-tier multistorey car park with 548 are to be constructed on a 4.2-acre site next to the 238-apartment Lightbox scheme.
Peel L&P lodged plans for the two car parks in November 2020 and Salford City Council has now given the plan the green light.
The scheme is being brought forward in an attempt to provide adequate parking provision to keep pace with the ongoing development in the area.
Glenbrook’s High Definition project, located on a neighbouring plot, was originally going to feature parking provision but much of it was scrapped, prompting the need for more parking spaces in the area.
The multistorey car park, comprising 548 parking spaces, would be built on the part of the site closest to Lightbox, designated as plot E1.
Plot E1 was most recently occupied by site cabins for Lightbox contractor Bouygues UK.
The surface level car park, providing an additional 162 spaces, would be created on an adjoining strip of disused land next to the Mode Wheel Locks.
AHR Architects is leading on design and heads a project team including landscape architect Gillespies, and planner NJL Consulting.

The car park should have been built underground with an actual park on top, instead of trying to disguise the car park with greenery with the current design.

With several tram stops and bus routes in the surrounding area it’s easy to see why we need another car park in the middle of a climate emergency…

Why not build it taller or add parking with the apartment blocks in the first place?
Why not a smaller footprint but much taller to allow half the plot to be used for something else?

A multi-storey carpark directly opposite a multi-storey carpark – excellent master planning…

We should be discouraging private car use in our cities.

Why not put it to good use like making this green land for use as a dog park for residents and visitors a like. Or maybe Green space for people to just go and sit.

Salford council are not saying how much the car park cost? Also can the council fill in potholes, as council tax is going up 5 per cent.

Parking charges at mediacityuk are extortionate, people who work there should get free parking

Trashing the waterfront with a car park. Seriously? MediaCity has the potential to feel truly urban, being the only part of the quays with proper walkable streets with active shopfronts and other uses above. A sterile car park at ground floor essentially kills off any chance of animating this part of the city. Would they do this in London?

Excellent. At least the developers have the common sense to provide parking for all of the people who will live and work there.

Whether the NIMBYs like it or not, people will be using cars as their main form of transport for the next 50 – 100 years whether you like it or not. Also this is not the city centre, if people are expected to work and live there they need parking provisions. The tram to Media City is not adequate to meet future demands as the area is transformed and developed further.

Look forward to seeing the council remove street parking to stop people leaving their bulky private property on public land.

Only hope the new car parks provide a suitable amount of electric charger points ie plan for the near future, it’s sooner than people think. In only a few years time with the price of EV’s coming down to less than the ICE equivalent and oil going up I’d suggest a lot of people are going to want to get to Media city that way.

Why didn’t they just put a deck on Ladywell P&R car park and have a shuttle bus to mediacity, to complement the tram services?

We need to encourage the use of more electric cars with incentives. At least this is planning for the future.

Always great to see more parking spaces but what a waste of space! Build another couple of waterfront high rises and stick a big basement / lower floor car park in with 1000 spaces.

Great, lets continue to encourage car dependency…

Parking here is a nightmare, long overdue spaces needed.
