Rochdale picks new market partner

Rochdale Council has announced its intention to appoint market turnaround specialist Quarterbridge to operate the town’s market.

Currently trading from the former council office site in Smith Street, a planning application has been submitted to move the market to a new permanent location on the Butts next to the re-opened River Roch.

Cllr Richard Farnell, leader of Rochdale Borough Council, said: “What we want for Rochdale is a thriving market, which will be a focal point of our regenerated town centre and attract visitors from far and wide, as well as providing a great, high quality shopping offer for our residents, alongside our new shopping and leisure development, Rochdale Riverside.

“With many years of experience both advising and running markets up and down the country, we feel that Quarterbridge are in the best position to drive these plans forward.”

Headquartered in Essex, Quarterbridge is no stranger to the region; in 2009 it was retained by Sefton Council to devise a business plan to secure funding for Southport Market’s £3.2m redevelopment, and subsequently managed the market for two years.

Quarterbridge worked with Hyndburn Council on the redevelopment of Accrington Market Hall and masterminded the relocation of Blackburn’s indoor market.

The firm was selected following a formal procurement process and should be formally appointed within weeks.

Once the market is operational on the Butts, an indoor market hall and trader facilities could be created in the neighbouring former Santander building, which has been acquired by the council.
