Repairs to Cumbrian road to start

The Highways Agency is carrying out overnight work to resurface the carriageway and repair potholes along five different sections of the A590 in Cumbria in August.

The £272,000 project will involve a total of 20 nights of work between Monday 15 August and Sunday 9 October, with no work taking place over the summer bank holiday between Wednesday 24 August and Tuesday 30 August.

The programme of working, being carried out between 8pm and 6am each night, includes:

  • Four nights of repairs along 800 yards of the single carriageway section and eastbound dual carriageway section of the A590 around the Lightburn Road junction at Ulverston starting on Monday 15 August
  • Six nights of work from Monday 12 September, along 2.5 miles of the westbound dual carriageway immediately west of Junction 36 of the M6
  • Four nights of work, from Monday 26 September, along a half-mile section of the westbound dual carriageway in both lanes near Heaves between the A6 and A591 junctions
  • Two nights of work, from Monday 3 October, along a half-mile section of the westbound dual carriageway and a single lane of the eastbound carriageway at Lindale Hill
  • Four nights of work in both directions along 400 yards of the single carriageway section at Rusland Pool, beginning on Wednesday 5 October

The Highways Agency is advising drivers that combinations of traffic management will be deployed but may include 10mph convoy working at times overnight to take traffic past the roadworks. At other times 50mph speed limits will be in place.

As well as some resurfacing and permanent patching repairs to potholes the work includes other surface repairs.

Signs are being erected at each of the sites to advise road users of timings of work.

Peter Gee, Highways Agency project sponsor, said: "We hope road users will appreciate that this is routine but important maintenance to tackle potholes, replace failed surfacing and carry out some extended resurfacing along some sections of the carriageway.

"We have worked hard to plan this work to minimise the impact on road users and do the work overnight when traffic volumes are very low."

Road users are also being advised that work elsewhere along the A590 will be taking place next month with a three week, £80,000 scheme to complete drainage repairs at Fiddlers Hall between High Newton and Newby Bridge set to start in early September. More details of this scheme will be released near the start date.
