Prince William opening Darwen facility

His Royal Highness Prince William and Catherine Middleton will formally open the Darwen Aldridge Community Academy next Monday 11 April.

Designed by Aedas Architects, the Lancashire academy contains business incubator units aimed at those interested in starting their own business within the local community.

Atrium spaces located at the main entrances of the building offer views over Darwen town centre, while surrounding landscape and grass roofs also feature.

David Kelly, regional director at Aedas, said: "It has been a great opportunity to work with the Aldridge Foundation on such an exciting and unique venture and the recognition of DACA by the royal couple is truly rewarding."

The facility is used by The Aldridge Foundation which aims to bridge a gap between education and business by providing the infrastructure, people and services to support young entrepreneurs whilst in education, through its programme known as Darwen Creates.

The Darwen Aldridge Community Academy opened in September 2008 on the site of the Darwen Moorland High School, and moved into its new building, located on Sudell Road in Darwen, two years later.

The education facility is aimed at those aged between 16 and 25 years old.

The Aldridge Foundation was established by Rod Aldridge in 2006, after he retired from Capita, a company he founded and built.
