Preston’s Harris Institute Building could become coworking, event hub

A new era awaits the grade two star-listed educational facility, with owner The Harris Investment Group outlining its plans to reinvent the historic site.

The Harris Investment Group is consulting with the public on turning the 15,400 sq ft school building off Avenham Lane into a multipurpose hub with a café, exhibition area, coworking facility, and event space. A consultation event on the plans will be held on 8 November between 1pm and 4pm at the Harris Institute.

The Harris Institute Building began its life as the Preston Institution for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge in 1849. Since then, it has been the Harris School of Art and, most recently, the Darul Aloom Islamic Institution.

Studio John Bridge Architects is leading on the redesign of the building, which is on Historic England’s register of at-risk heritage buildings.

“This is an exciting moment for Preston, as we work together to rejuvenate this historic gem,” said John Bridge, the lead architect on the scheme.

“The Harris Institute Building will continue to stand as a symbol of our rich heritage, and we want to work closely with the Preston community to develop a vision for the building that aligns with local aspirations,” he continued. “We know how important this historic asset is to Prestonians.”

Joining Studio John Bridge on the project team are heritage expert Gately Smithers Purlow, planning consultant Eden Planning, and cost analyser The QS Company.

The Harris Investment Group will be bidding for funding from Historic England and the Heritage Lottery Fund to support the revamp scheme, provided the organisation can secure planning permission and listed building consent from Preston City Council.

Looks a very promising scheme.

This building has been empty for too long.

A lovely building in a cracking neighbourhood. Good luck to all involved.

I go on weekly walks around Avenham Park during the walk I always take time to admire the architecture of the Harris Institute Building. It is fantastic the building will be repurposed and brought back to life as a multi purpose venue for all Prestonians and local businesses to enjoy .
