Preparation underway for £36m Liverpool Cruise Terminal
Peel Ports has applied for permission to demolish an “unsightly and dangerous” jetty at Princes Dock located where a long-proposed modern terminal would be constructed.
Disused for more than 40 years, Princes Jetty juts out into the Mersey off Princes Parade and was once part of the Liverpool Landing Stage, constructed in the late 1800s.
Today, it is in a poor state of repair and Peel Ports is seeking to disengage the jetty from the harbour wall and demolish it.
The work forms part of Global Ports Holding’s plans to deliver a new cruise terminal in Liverpool.
According to planning documents submitted with the application to demolish Princes Jetty, GPH is looking to invest £36m in the terminal and associated infrastructure that will allow for the simultaneous berthing of two ships.
Cassidy + Ashton is advising Peel Ports on the removal of the jetty. The plans can be viewed by searching for reference number 26F/2392 on Liverpool City Council’s planning portal.
The terminal has been in the pipeline for over a decade and in 2018, Liverpool City Council approved plans for a 108,000 sq ft facility costing an estimated £50m.
Work had been expected to complete in 2022 but various delays and cost increases of around £40m resulted in the city council pulling the plug on the scheme in 2023.
The following year, Global Ports Holding, which operates cruise ports across the globe, signed a 50-year lease in Liverpool, agreeing to construct a new terminal building in the process.
