SMC Alsop sketches leisure phase for Spinningfields

Architects SMC Alsop have been commissioned by Allied London to work up designs for a series of leisure buildings for the thriving commercial quarter Spinningfields in central Manchester.

The work-in-progress sketches (click on gallery below) relate to a range of sites reserved for uses from small newsagent kiosks to florists, food halls, restaurants, hotels and cinemas. Working names for the colourful buildings include the Lexicon, the Bond, the Skirt and the Tea House.

Mike Ingall, chief executive of Allied London, unveiling the designs at Property Week's recent Regenerate!Manchester conference, said he was keen to see more block colour introduced to the area to counter the profusion of glass offices on show.

The first couple of leisure buildings could be delivered in the next 18 months.
