Huawei opens Manchester office
The communications giant has opened its first office in the North West after taking 4,000 sq ft at the Blue Tower at Salford’s MediaCityUK.
Huawei’s base at Salford Quays will house operations including customer account teams, and the company’s network design and delivery operations centre for the north of the UK. Initially, up to 50 roles will be created at the Blue Tower.
China-based Huawei operates in 170 countries across the world, and the Salford Quays office will be its fourth in the UK; it also has bases in London, Reading, and Ipswich.
Jerry Wang, Huawei UK chief executive, said: “We are delighted to announce our first facility in the heart of the Northern Powerhouse and birthplace of the first industrial revolution. The North West is an important region for Huawei as we look to continue our growth in the UK.
“Greater Manchester’s talented workforce and emerging tech scene make it an exciting city to invest in, the city is now at the forefront of healthcare and university tech-led innovations today.”
Stephen Wild, managing director of MediaCityUK said: “Huawei’s decision to base part of its UK operations here further demonstrates MediaCityUK to be a leading creative, technological and digital hub in the UK.
“Over the next decade MediaCityUK is set to expand physically and evolve digitally, meaning we can welcome even more cutting-edge organisations from a variety of sectors and host more incubator and accelerator programmes. Our 5G infrastructure will support these advancements and will also enable us to test and hone our smart city ambitions.”

People need to leave this nonsense behind and realise the Manchester is an asset not a hindrance – the fact that Manchester is on its doorstep is the only reason why Media City was even viable. If Salford was a isolated city in its own right it would never have been built.

Salford and the towns to the South of the city are connected to Manchester and call it town. Bolton, Oldham, Rochdale and Bury are Lancashire towns. Oldham will never be the Manc version of Hendon. Nobody in any of those towns refers to Manchester as town. Having the city close is a major asset though that is for sure.

Stockport and South Trafford from Sale is Cheshire. Bury north of Prestwich is Lancs and Rochdale north of Middleton. Oldham, Bolton and Wigan definitely Lancs. Manchester stretches West to Worsley and East to Ashton.

In Bolton like others have seen our regional town centres ebb away at the expense of the governments mentality of a so called Northern Powerhouse that to them only exists in Manchester. The opportunities and investment need to be spread much further.

Cities are economic entities first and foremost. All the places mentioned in the comments are Manchester since they’re substantially one and the same market for business, labour, retail and leisure; as well as being in the same travel to work area.
Manchester is Oldham; Oldham is Manchester.
Alderly Edge is Manchester; Manchester is Alderly Edge.
Manchester is Bury; Bury is Manchester.
Etc.
The same principle does not apply to Merseyside / Wirral however.

I’m from Bolton, now live in Bury, town is Mcr City Centre to me and my family. Plenty of investment has already happened in Bury, Stockport and Altrincham town centres.

@Anon there’s probably a good reason you moved from Bolton, the town centre is a dump and been left to decline, I am still yet to see the benefit locally to me of what Manchester city centre is reaping.

The town centre started its decline shortly after the development of the Trafford Centre and Middlebrook, both with free parking. Bolton council didn’t help itself creating that retail destination five miles out of the town centre. A large percentage of Bolton inhabitants work in Mcr City Centre every day, eat out And have nights out there. Many see Mcr City centre as their city centre too.
