HBJ debuts with Mere bank deal

Law firm HBJ Gateley Wareing said it has completed its first real estate transaction in Manchester following the acquisition of Halliwells' corporate division.

HBJ advised Mere Golf & Country Club on the refinancing of the club's current bank facilities with the Royal Bank of Scotland and putting in place a new facility with RBS that will enable the construction of a hotel and spa development on its site at Mere to go ahead. Mere plans a £15m extension comprising 81 bedrooms, health spa and swimming pool.

Manchester-based banking partner, Rick Sealy, led the transaction, along with corporate partner Mark Halliwell. Sealy said: "This is a significant transaction in the leisure sector at this time and we are delighted to have acted for Mere Golf and Country Club. Their future plans for the club and its development are tremendously exciting and could help to create many new jobs in the area."
