Demolition of bridge starts on M56

Work will start on demolishing the M56 Bowdon View Bridge on junction 7 in south Manchester this weekend.

The M56 motorway will be closed eastbound from its junction with the M6 at junction 9 and westbound from junction 6 at Hale Barns from 10pm on Friday 15 October until 5am on Monday 18 October, as demolition work is carried out on the bridge, linking junction 7 of the M56 and the A556.

A new £3.2m bridge has been constructed on a site alongside the motorway to replace the old bridge, which has become corroded.

A giant multi-wheeled vehicle will jack-up the 1,830 tonne, 74-metre-long bridge, carry it 500 metres along the M56, and slowly manoeuvre it into place over the motorway.

As the new bridge is moved into place the following weekend, the same closures will happen from 10pm on Friday 22 October until 5am on Monday 25 October.

The Highways Agency said the M56 junction 7 westbound exit slip road will remain closed to traffic throughout that week, reopening at 5am on Monday 25 October.

A great idea and looking forward to a speedier connection to the M6 southbound.

Like the last paragraph in the above report, the M56 junction 7 westbound exit slip road will remain closed to traffic throughout that week! Possibly because the new bridge will still be in the field with the old bridge being now a heavenly bridge in the sky somewhere!

The so called highways agency are a bunch of ******* *****, who have masssive budgets to spend every year – and instead of addressing real problems, they spend the money on painting the streets with red and green paint and making stupid single file systems on roads that have previously never had problems. These ******** want putting against the wall and shooting the ******** *****. Just look at Chorlton – what a ****-up, the lights at Owens Park Fallowfield, that ******* junction at Bowden – Aaaarrrgh ******** highways agency *****.
