Cube Open success prompts 2008 follow-up

Cube, Manchester's Centre for the Urban Built Environment, will hold another Open art exhibition next year after the success of its inaugural show this summer.

With over 250 entries from national and international artists, the judging panel picked a final selection of 14 diverse works themed around the urban built environment.

Rich White's architectural intervention, the winning entry, changed the shape of the gallery wall with a twisting structure built from found materials. The runners up were Robin Maurice's digital prints Nightscapes 1 and 2 (see above), and Michael J Jones, whose 10cm by 8cm Maquette For the Night showed an Ad Reinhardt (American Abstract Expressionist) billboard seen from a distance.

Jack Hale, head of development at Cube, said: "The Open exhibition was very well attended and attracted a lot of media interest and we will definitely be holding another one next year."

Winning artist White will be offered a residency in the gallery as part of next year's Cube Open, due to be held in July 2008.

The Cube Open is supported by the National Lottery through the Arts Council of England and runs until 25 August 2007, with free entry Monday to Saturday 12.30pm to 5.30pm at Cube Gallery, 113-115 Portland Street, Manchester M1 6DW. See also http://www.cube.org.uk/.
