New Workington Tesco store ‘being delayed’

Plans for a new 92,900sq ft Tesco Extra store in Workington, Cumbria, are being delayed due to a planning application agreement not being signed by the supermarket chain, Allerdale Council revealed today.

Tesco expected to start work at the end of this month, but delays in signing the planning agreement have meant it will not be able to redirect a nearby river until the autumn, which is crucial to the development.

Building work could not start on the Cloffocks site once the Section 106 agreement was signed, which has still not been finalised.

A spokesperson for Allerdale Council said today: "Allerdale Council is waiting for Tesco to sign the section 106 agreement, which was part of the conditions for the approval of their planning application for the new store."

Issues regarding the underpass linking the Tesco store to the town centre also had to be resolved before work can start on site.

Allerdale Council plans to demolish the current Tesco site and build a new stadium to house both Workington Town rugby club and Workington Reds football club if plans are approved in a full council meeting at the end of January.

The Cloffocks site was bought for £18m and would offer three times the size of Workington's current Tesco store on New Bridge Road.

It is expected to take nine months to build the new store.
