MIPIM VIDEO | How Salford is delivering net zero in partnership
Creating sustainable communities is not easy but can be done when the private and public sector come together with a clear and committed vision, according to the city council’s John Searle and Muse’s Phil Mayall.
Searle is the director of place at Salford City Council. Mayall is the managing director of Muse in the North West. The two spoke with Place North West at MIPIM about how the local authority and the developer are working together on transforming Salford.
Major projects in the city – the £1bn Salford Central masterplan, Greengate, and the £2.5bn Salford Crescent – were highlighted by Searle, as well as the Eccles town centre regeneration scheme.
Mayall put a spotlight on the under-construction Eden and his hopes that the green office building will inspire others. He also used it as an example of how sustainability does not have to be a box-ticking exercise but can add real value to a project. The green façade on Eden, for example, provides thermal mass for the building as well as boosts biodiversity.
Searle agreed about Eden’s importance. “It will be a landmark building of the future,” he said.
Searle and Mayall also shared their strategies for a successful partnership and their vision for the future and delved into how their long-term, committed, and ambitious relationship has allowed them to ensure that net zero commitments remain a priority.
