Manchester approves 40 affordable Chorlton homes
An industrial unit off Albany Road is to be demolished to make way for an apartment complex to be managed by Southway Housing Trust.
Southway and Bowsall Developments are working together on the proposals, which scored unanimous approval at Manchester City Council’s planning committee meeting on Thursday.
The project will see the construction of 40 shared ownership flats at 4B Albany Road in Chorlton. The site is currently the home to Autometers Systems and a small parking lot. It sits within a five-minute to the Chorlton Metrolink tram stop.
Designed by WDW Architecture, the largely brick building will offer 21 one-bedroom and 19 two-bedroom flats. There would also be a 20-space car park underneath the premises, accessed from a ramp off Albany Road.
Provision has been made for 40 bicycles to be stored.
Hourigan Planning submitted the application on behalf of Bowsall Developments and Southway Housing Trust. The project team includes Trevor Bridge Associates, Topping Engineers, Prime Transport Planning, Element Sustainability, E3P, Proximity, and Rachel Hacking Ecology.

Chorlton is terrible for parking so that is not adequate provision for parking

This article neglected to mention the small businesses who will be ill-affected by the construction. Following COVID these businesses who have struggled to survive will now again struggle to be able to open their doors due to the noise and commotion that will be caused during this build that will take place over the coming months and many will be forced to close. Consideration and compensation should have been granted to these businesses who are run by local people and who help make Chorlton what it is. Affordable housing is great but putting local people out of business negates that good and makes it shameful. This article silences the voices of the people who were ignored in the decision making for this planning permission approval.

I hope the housing is affordable and not above first time buyers needs.

Looks good.

Such a shame it isn’t bigger. Chorlton isn’t what it used to be and needs more local spending from new residents. This is a sustainable location by the metrolink, Morrisons and 5 minutes walk from all life’s essentials in Chorlton.

Traffic is awful in Chorlton, people park everywhere and residents end up parked streets away from their houses, it needs a system like they have in Altrincham and Hale.

DH – can people not park somewhere else and walk to their houses? Might force motorists to get a bit of exercise for once.
Better yet get a bike.

The balconies are welcomed, however are those people floating in that image?!

Under-building car parks should be mandatory in built-up areas. Don’t you think. Car spaces can be rented-out as well.

The free car storage areas on public highway are clearly not enough and we need more car storage areas and less houses for people to live in.

When are these ready

The parking in Chorlton is horrendous. So you build 40 dwellings with 20 parking spaces. Does that mean you will have to say no to some residents because they have cars and there isn’t enough parking spaces?

A naive person would say they won’t drive because there is a tram, we all know the reality

Nothing naive about it mate. And who’s this ‘we’?

20 parking spaces for what could potentially be up to 120 residents. Thoughtful
