Liverpool votes to oppose Everton/Tesco’s plans for Kirkby

Liverpool City Council will officially object to Everton FC and Tesco's £400m plans for a new stadium and retail in neighbouring Knowsley.

The objections to the Destination Kirkby scheme will be made on the grounds that any such development would have a negative impact on retailers across North Liverpool and even on Liverpool city centre.

A council spokesman said: "We have objected on the grounds that this is contrary to planning policy and regional guidance. The scale of the development is far too big and would have a detrimental impact on shopping districts as far as Liverpool City Council and in the north of Liverpool."

Cushman & Wakefield has been commissioned by Liverpool to carry out a report to evaluate the effect the scheme could have on its city centre.

Plans for the 540,000 sq ft new club and retail scheme, which includes a 110,000 sq ft Tesco Extra store, a 55,000-seat stadium, and 50 retail units, have already caused much controversy within the area, with local residents voicing their concerns about the impact the project could have on Kirkby town centre.

In March, Tesco announced changes to the original masterplan including a larger emphasis on developing the existing town centre, a further £10m to be spent on infrastructure and public realm works and a reduction in the amount of retail space to be created in the new development from 775,000 sq ft to 592,000 sq ft.

Knowsley council's planning committee meets next week to discuss the application, which its officers have recommended for approval.
