Lidl to acquire Wythenshawe plot from city council

The supermarket giant is progressing plans for a 27,000 sq ft store on the former Buzz Bingo site off Rowlandsway, which is owned by Manchester City Council.

The two-storey Lidl would form part of the wider regeneration of Wythenshawe, which was sparked in June when Manchester City Council announced plans to acquire part of St Modwen’s 350,000 sq ft civic centre.

The disposal of the bingo site to Lidl has not yet been approved but is listed on the city council’s key decisions register.

Lidl’s Wythenshawe store, located close to the civic centre, will feature a bakery, customer toilets and an 87-space car park, according to plans being shared at a public consultation.

The new store forms part of the company’s ongoing £1.3bn investment across the country in 2021 and 2022.

Lidl’s purchase of the Wythenshawe site would be its second acquisition in Manchester this year.

In June, the company bought a £4m plot off Mauldeth Road West from PJD Holdings, beating off competition from more than 15 residential developers.

Last week saw Lidl lose an appeal against Salford City Council’s decision to refuse plans for a store as part of Salboy’s 500-home redevelopment of the former Castle Irwell student village.

Oh the history on that site when it was the Golden Garter. Lidl will do well there but it’s a rather different form of entertainment sadly.
