Designed by Bowker Sadler Architects, the 17,000 sq ft facility at the £200m City Football Academy training complex includes a gym, hydrotherapy area, and physio spaces for use by the Women’s Super League champions.

This is the first dedicated building for Manchester City Women’s Football Club, which previously shared training facilities with the men’s team. The £10m space was built by John Turner Construction.

Situated close to the team’s 7,000-seater Joie Stadium, the facility has a circular dressing room to help the players connect and bond in the lead up to a match. There are other social areas too, and a wall with the names of every player who has had more than 100 appearances during their time on the team.

“This new facility marks the next logical step in our long-term commitment to Manchester City Women, and is an important milestone for the club as a whole,” said Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak.

“We have always believed in investing to create the right environment for players and staff to develop and succeed. That approach has underpinned every aspect of our work since the professional relaunch of Manchester City Women in 2014.”

He continued: “The facility therefore rightly reflects the scale of our ambition for Manchester City Women and our long-term belief in the future of the women’s game.”

Plans were submitted for the building at the start of 2024, a fact that was not lost on Manchester City WFC managing director Charlotte O’Neill.

“After years of planning, designing and constructing, we are proud to open our new world-class space that we believe offers some of the very best facilities in women’s sport in the UK,” she said.

“This building is about so much more than bricks and mortar; it is about creating an environment where our players can thrive, where standards are set at the very highest level, and where the current squad has everything it needs to continue to compete for and win silverware.”

Turner & Townsend was the project manager and cost manager for the scheme, with P4 Planning securing the planning permission required from Manchester City Council. The project team also included structural designer Marston & Grundy, Saville Landscaping Design, RD M&E Group, RS Security Consultants, and Ashton Fire.

Dawnvale was charged with the kitchen design and delivery, while Perform Better did the same for the gym and Hydra Leisure did so for the hydrotherapy space. Rounding out the team were AV systems specialist One Diversified and branding designer Fusion Digital.

Looks like a fantastic facility and well liked by the players. Excellent news to see a North West based Architect delivering the design! MCFC have also published a really good drone fly-through on other media outlets.
