Fallowfield ‘Toast Rack’ comes to market
DTZ is marketing for sale Manchester Metropolitan University's distinctive southern campus, which consists of 154,000 sq ft in four buildings on 3.7-acres.
The grade 2-listed Hollings building on Wilmslow Road was designed by architect Leonard Cecil Howitt and opened in 1960 for courses in food, clothing, hospitality and tourism.
MMU is consolidating its operations from seven campuses to two, located around Oxford Road and the new Birley Fields site in Hulme.
DTZ is handling the disposal of all the surplus sites which include Aytoun Street in Manchester centre, Didsbury, Elizabeth Gaskell in Victoria Park, and much of the university's site at Alsager, Cheshire.
Chris Lloyd, director at DTZ, said: "We anticipate interest from a broad range of developers, investors and occupiers. The site has potential for conversion to residential, education and commercial uses. The Toast Rack is one of Manchester's most recognisable buildings and we believe this will appeal to prospective purchasers looking to create a distinctive scheme with a premium value."
I hope the building is listed

Morning all. I’d like to tell you about when I was a young developer. I must have been three or four months old at the time. So I sat there in me highchair, thinking one day, looking at me tray and thinking what I’d give for a meal on there. So I started looking round to see what I could have. I was rubbing me eggy soldier in me head, , and then I looked in the corner and there’s a little breadbin with its mouth open, just staring at me, like. And then I looked in and I saw bread. I thought, oh yeah, I’ll have toast, A little piece of toast rack.
