End nears for Chapel Street stalwart
Salford convenience store Shalimar closed its doors last month after 40 years. An application to trigger its demolition has now been lodged by developer consortium English Cities Fund.
The recognisable yellow-fronted store had resisted closure and demolition for several years while neighbouring developments including the 173-unit Atelier, and the 97-home Vimto Gardens sprung up on either side of Shalimar on Chapel Street as part of a wider masterplan for the area.
However, the Shalimar building is now due to be levelled subject to Salford City Council approving a demolition statement prepared by Inglenorth Contracting on behalf of English Cities Fund.
ECF is made up of Muse Developments, Legal & General and Homes England.
The demolition of the Shalimar store was consented under the outline permission for ECF’s Salford Central masterplan, granted in 2010. An application lodged last week seeks to discharge a number of conditions that will allow the work to take place.
Known as plot E6, the site is earmarked for a four-to-six-storey residential development under the Salford Central masterplan.
A new public space to be known as St John’s Place is proposed nearby, between plot E6 and Atelier.
Once complete, the Salford Central masterplan will have delivered around 850 homes.
