Deal struck in Wythenshawe for ‘Europe’s largest climbing centre’

Yorkshire Climbing Company, which operates Depot Climbing at Trafford Park, has taken almost 51,000 sq ft at Southmoor Industrial Estate and plans to invest £5m, creating its second Greater Manchester venue.

The Wythenshawe facility will boast what is being billed as Europe’s largest indoor climbing wall.

“Following the success of our Trafford Park site, we want to develop a facility that will be genuinely world-class,” said Yorkshire Climbing Company director Steve Dunning.

“The high-quality space at Southmoor Industrial Estate allows us to build a climbing centre to IFSC standards so that both beginners and Olympic hopefuls alike can enjoy climbing under the same roof.

He added: “Big Depot Manchester will set a new standard for climbing facilities in the UK and will become a destination for climbers from across the country given the excellent transport and access links that this location provides.”

Knight Frank brokered the deal.

KF partner Rob Tilley said: “The Yorkshire Climbing Company wanted not just a great location but a high-quality space that fits their brand.

“It is interesting to see different occupiers come in and turn logistics buildings into something totally new.”

South Street Capital is the asset manager for Southmoor, which offers 340,000 sq ft of industrial and logistics space and is home to tenants including the NHS and Schmitz Cargobull.

Helen Macrow, director at South Street Capital, said: “We are delighted to welcome Yorkshire Climbing Company Limited to Southmoor Industrial Estate and are excited to watch the transformation of Unit A5/6 into Europe’s largest climbing centre.

“Acting on behalf of overseas clients, South Street Capital have managed the refurbishment and development of Southmoor Industrial Estate over the last five years.”

I want to say to the Yorkshire company absolutely outstanding for picking Wythenshawe. One of the best places in the world, full of hard-working, honest and respectful people. Been the founder of Wythenshawe award-winning mental health group Project 23. Wall climbing is an extremely strenuous workout. Which is fantastic to get people fit again. Obviously newcomers to climbing will start off slow, but believe me when I went climbing with one of my friends I could not believe the muscles it was using. It’s a great way of keeping fit and keeping active Thank you for choosing Wythenshawe.

Good – I’m local and just hope it’s affordable for our younger people whom are always asking for things to do and really do need challenging activities rather than soft soap stuff
