Cumberland appoints chief executive

Jo Atkinson will take the lead role at the local authority in January, taking over from retiring chief executive Andrew Seekings.

Atkinson is the current director of corporate and transformation services and deputy chief executive at Cumberland Council. Over the course of her more than 25-year career in the public service, she has worked at Cumbria County Council, the National Probation Service, and His Majesty’s Prison Service.

“It is a real privilege to have the opportunity to serve as chief executive of Cumberland Council,” Atkinson said. “Cumberland has been my home for more than ten years and is a place that means a great deal to me and my family.”

“My priority is simple: to make a positive difference for the people and communities we serve, ensuring the council delivers high-quality services and creates opportunities for Cumberland to thrive.”

Cumberland Council Leader Cllr Mark Fryer praised Atkinson’s promotion.

“Jo brings a wealth of experience, a proven track record of delivery and a deep understanding of both our organisation and the communities we serve,” he said.

“Having played a key role in Cumberland Council’s journey since its creation, she has helped build the strong foundations on which we can continue to grow and improve.”

Cumberland Council is in the midst of a series of regeneration projects, including the £50m Cleator Moor Innovation Quarter, the Whitehaven masterplan, and as a partner on the University of Cumbria’s £85m refresh of the historic Citadels.
