In the second of the three-part series, Place North West takes a look at what has been happening in and around central Liverpool during the past four months.
There are around 50 live projects in the centre of Liverpool, where work has continued on site during lockdown.
The tour starts in the south docks and takes in the Baltic Triangle, Kings Dock, the Strand, Princes Dock and Central Docks in Liverpool Waters, business district, Duke Street, Knowledge Quarter, London Road, New Islington and more.
There is a wide range of activity taking place creating spaces for hotels and district heat networks, a ferry terminal, multiple apartment blocks, offices and hospitals.

Fire on New Year’s Eve in 2017 destroyed the multi-storey car park at Kings Dock. The car park was later demolished and a temporary 500-space facility erected while this one was constructed.

Since mid-March, works have continued with the internal fit-out and completions to apartments on levels one to 12. Penthouse apartments on the 13th floor are nearing the watertight stage. Heritage repairs to the terracotta work and windows have also commenced. Externally, civil works to facilitate the building’s connection to the Mersey Heat District Heat Network are also progressing.

The Spine saw glazing completed and tower crane and mastclimbers removed, internal works progressing, CAT A fit-out, and the building has been lit blue to celebrate the NHS. The hotel structure has risen out of the ground since March, stair core one cast to level seven, core two cast to level 16 and the floors cast to level two, a façade sample panel has been installed and approved by the client and planners, other samples have been prepared for the prefabricated bathrooms and the prototype bedroom. At the Multi-Storey Car Park & Energy Centre the steel frame for the energy centre commenced and completed, pre-cast core is completed to level 12, flue installed and ready to commence on the car park decks.

Elliot retained two principal sub-contractors, WDS Commercial and BAK-UK, managed by main contractor Exchange Construction, established by Elliot to finish the scheme. Bulk of the work relates to replacement of insulation and other materials behind the cladding. The cladding itself is already compliant, although different rivets will be used to fix it to the new railing system holding the insulation panels in place. Ten weeks from completion, Elliot said.

Floors one to four are set for completion in the next eight weeks with floors five to seven due to complete by the end of the year.
