Consent for Burmah Mill transformation

What remains of the 19th-century Blackburn weaving mill can now be redeveloped to create two industrial units, totalling around 22,000 sq ft.

Blackburn with Darwen Council followed officer recommendations to approve Burmah Mill’s transformation under delegated powers.

The green-lit application includes retrospective permission for the property’s partial demolition, which has already taken place.

Plans will see the two remaining portal frames recladded and replaced with a pair of warehouses, measuring 9,100 sq ft and 12,900 sq ft respectively. These units will provide “contemporary commercial floorspace suitable for 21st century business operation”, according to a planning statement.

Located off Gladstone Street, the former mill structure dates back to the 1880s and sits within Blackburn and the Green Bank Secondary Employment Area.

Planning consultant Urban Future filed the plans for the scheme last month on behalf of a private developer.
