Chorlton Irish Club up for sale again
Metis Real Estate has been appointed to seek offers in excess of £1m for the High Lane building four years after it was last saved from the threat of closure.
The agency said Chorlton Irish Club presents a “unique opportunity for redevelopment” while the Irish Association Social Club said the decision to sell the building had not been made lightly.
A spokesperson for the Irish Association Social Club said: “After considerable discussion and debate, the decision to sell the property was unanimously reached by all closely involved with the club, including the trustees, founder families and last serving committee.”
This is not the first time the trustees have sought to sell the site. In 2020 they appointed Colliers to market the plot, which prompted concerns from members that they would lose the club, founded in 1956.
In 2021, Southway Housing Association agreed to acquire the club’s car park to develop 24 apartments in an agreement that would see the building retained.
With work on that scheme nearing completion, a sale of the building itself is back on the table. The club has said funds generated by selling the site would be used to form an Irish Charitable Trust to support the Irish community in Manchester.
Ellis Hearfield, director at Metis Real Estate Advisors, said: “Chorlton is firmly established as one of South Manchester’s most highly sought after neighbourhoods, for both families and young professionals alike.
“This prime redevelopment opportunity is suitable for a variety of uses (subject to planning) and we anticipate a strong level of interest from a wide range of potential purchasers.”
They’ll be lucky to get “strong interest from a wide range of potential purchasers” after trying to sell this multiple times and messing interested parties around… They should have sold this as one site and maximised their return as a developer could have redeveloped the whole site rather than just a part of it.

The only sensible thing to do is knock the whole thing down and build from scratch. It’s a horrible building that’s been badly extended over the years.

Sad finale for a once thriving club but all good things come to an end provided many happy memories for the community.

I wouldn’t like anyone to hold their breath expecting to see any of the proceeds invested in a charitable trust. It’s not like they haven’t already had £ms from the sale of the car park. It’s just a pity they didn’t sell the whole thing at once and get the developing once and done.

I’m sure the 2 trustees will have well in mind good use for the monies raised from the last sale and the present one .Look forward to seeing lots of similar places organisations benefit from the sale.

The building is worthless, horrible thing. It’s the value of the land it’s sat on that’s got the price tag.

The property in total was purchased by the founders for the exclusive enjoyment of the members and it was registered as such in the articles of association. No set of trustees or individuals have the right to sell the car park and now the building. It would be very interesting to see how the proceeds from both sales are distributed. The members have a right to know.
