Cains redevelopment gets final go-ahead

Planning consultancy Turley has cleared the final hurdle in gaining planning approval on behalf of Sudarghara Dusanj from Liverpool City Council for the redevelopment of the 1m sq ft former Cains Brewery complex.

The hybrid application for the new Brewery Village was approved by the council's planning committee in November 2013 but, due to its size, the decision was referred to the Secretary of State, who approved the scheme in January 2014. This week, Liverpool City Council issued formal approval allowing work to commence.

The site is owned by Brewery Village Ltd, a company established by the family of Sudarghara Dusanj, who operated the brewery and still owns the land and buildings.

The Brewery Village scheme comprises the conversion and extension of the grade 2-listed brewery building for a range of uses including a new craft brewery and museum, a boutique hotel with 94 bedrooms and an art-house cinema.

Outline permission has also been granted for 725 new homes, a 41,900 sq ft foodstore and 36,300 sq ft of flexible commercial accommodation.

Mark Worcester, director in Turley's Manchester office, said: "We are extremely pleased with this decision. It opens the way for a major new tourism and leisure destination in Liverpool, providing many new jobs. It will be a real asset for the city."

Cains Brewery is currently seeking partners and operators for the cinema, hotel and supermarket to help take the scheme forward. The first phase of Brewery Village is expected to be completed by summer 2016.
