Blackpool Airport to reopen

Balfour Beatty has announced that it will operate Blackpool Airport for the use of small aircraft and helicopters.

Blackpool International Airport closed on 15 October after failing to find a buyer, with all commercial flights diverted to other regional airports such as Manchester. The site had been on the market since August, with owner Balfour Beatty reportedly supporting losses at the airport for a number of years.

A new company, Squires Gate Airport Operations, has been established and is registered to Balfour Beatty's London office. Squires Gate is currently advertising for air traffic controllers and other airport staff to start work at the beginning of December.

A spokesman for Balfour Beatty said: "Following the airport closure, we announced our commitment to develop a sustainable future for aviation services at Blackpool Airport. Today is the first step in that process.

"Squires Gate Airport Operations will support the return of independent aviation businesses to Blackpool, including Bond Offshore Helicopters.

"We look forward to working with the local councils and other stakeholders as we seek to ensure a long term future for flying in Blackpool."
