Bikes for hire at Merseyrail stations
Bike & Go, a nationwide cycle hire scheme, will officially launch at Liverpool Central Station on Tuesday 13 August.
The scheme received £1.65m from the Department for Transport and is designed to offer rail users affordable bike hire for their onward journey from the station and promote sustainable travel.
There will initially be 100 bikes spread around 10 Merseyrail stations, to be followed by further availability at dozens of train stations across the North West, North East, Anglia and the South East.
Transport Minister Norman Baker said: "Encouraging people to travel sustainably is all about making it easier and more convenient for people to make greener travel choices. That is why DfT have provided £1.65m for this scheme, which does just that, by offering rail users affordable bike hire for their onward journey from the station. I want to see more schemes like this that support sustainable travel and give people a viable door-to-door option."
The initiative differs from many other current bike schemes in that it is designed to be part of a journey rather than simply a leisure option
The scheme will cost £10 for an annual subscription and £3.80 per day of bike hire.
Here is how it will work:
- Register your credit or debit card details online and pay the annual subscription fee
- Receive your Bike & Go card in the post
- Check availability at your chosen station from September
- Hand in Bike & Go card at the station's ticket office to collect the key to your bike
- The rental fee will automatically be charged at the end of every month
- Unlock the bike from the station
- Remember to use both locks when leaving your bike unattended
- Return bike to station, lock it and return key to ticket office
