Basford link road moves step closer

Cheshire East Council has formally started the long-awaited procurement process for the contractor to build the Crewe Green Link Road South, opening up 370 acres of development land.

A tender notice for a £19m contract was published on Wednesday for work scheduled for completion by October 2015.

The contractor will build a 1.1km dual carriageway between two existing roundabouts north and south of Basford and, through creation of a new roundabout at the midway point, will provide access to key development land to the east and west which has been recognised in planning guidance as a North West strategic employment site for many years but not been brought forward.

Cllr Michael Jones, leader of Cheshire East Council, said: "This is great news for Crewe and it is part of the Cheshire East Council vision for greater connectivity for the whole of the Borough.

"It could be followed up by a Congleton relief road, Poynton bypass and the M6 link road.

"We are excited to see that this project is on schedule and it's a very promising outcome as part of the development of Crewe."

The road scheme also involves the highway passing beneath an existing railway line, which requires the construction of a new bridge to carry the railway over the new highway. This will involve a rail possession and closure of the line to undertake the works.

The approved contractor will need to meet Network Rail's strict requirements and hold the necessary licences to carry out the work.
