Architect selected for Liverpool’s Royal Court
London-based Allford Hall Monaghan Morris has been chosen as the architect to restore the Royal Court theatre in Roe Street, Liverpool city centre.
The practice beat local firms Union North Architects in Hope Street, and Studio Three Architects based in Fleet Street, and London firms Burrell Foley Fischer and Pentagram.
Glasgow's Nord Architects and Studio Andrew Todd from Paris also lost out on the contract win.
AHMM won a RIBA award in 2007 for its nearby Unity Building in Liverpool.
The winning scheme to revamp the 1938 art deco theatre was picked by a jury chaired by architect Roger Stephenson and Jonathan Falkingham, the chief executive of Urban Splash and a trustee of the newly formed Royal Court Liverpool Trust.
AHMM's design was praised for addressing key challenges, such as disabled access and for improving public access and circulation within the building to create a clear and exciting concept for the upgrading of the Grade II-listed theatre.
