Anchor Hanover advances Woodford extra care living

The care home operator has exchanged contracts with Redrow subsidiary Harrow Estates to take 4 acres of the former airfield for 104 homes. Plans are now in with Stockport council.

Working with Brewster Bye Architects, Anchor Hanover, described as England’s largest not-for-profit provider of specialist housing and later life care, aims to build 87 affordable rent or shared ownership apartments and 17 shared ownership bungalows.

Catering and other amenities will be available to residents. The site sits within the garden village-type development being advanced by Harrow at the 500-acre former BAE Systems site, which when complete will include 920 homes.

The Anchor Hanover plot sits at the western side of the masterplan area, close to Chester Road and its public transport connections. New footpaths will link into existing paths on Derry Lane.

Charles Taylor, head of new business at Anchor Hanover, said the scheme “adds another string to our bow”. The London-headquartered organisation is looking to deliver 5,700 later life homes.

If plans are approved, Taylor said, work could start in early 2022, with people moving in from spring 2024.

Senior architect at Brewster Bye Emily Cain said: “Inclusivity has been at the heart of our design process. The apartments and bungalows will operate as one unified development, with care and services being delivered to the occupants of both.”

People in the bungalows will have seamless access to the shared facilities in the apartment buildings, she said.
