Allies & Morrison to design Peel hotel
Allies & Morrison has won an architectural competition run by RIBA for a Peel commission to design a new hotel for Worsley New Hall in Salford.
The London-based studio beat finalists Edward Cullinan Architects, Feilden Clegg Bradley, Henning Larsen Architects, Hopkins and Ian Simpson Architects and were selected unanimously by the panel of judges.
Bob Allies, Partner at Allies & Morrison commented: "Allies and Morrison are really delighted to have been selected for this project, an ambitious building on a very important site, an opportunity to integrate a modern hotel into the surviving fragments of a significant Victorian landscape."
Peter Nears, strategic planning director of Peel, said: "I would like to thank the RIBA and David Morley, their architectural adviser, for running an excellent competition, which has delivered a worthy winner in Allies & Morrison. We look forward to working with them to produce an exceptional hotel building for the site of the former Worsley New Hall. We were impressed with the quality of all the shortlisted schemes, their respect for the setting and the manner in which they complemented the landscape features of the location and thank all the architectural practices for taking part."
David Morley, RIBA Architectural Adviser, said: "This was a closely fought competition for a potentially amazing hotel on the site of the former Worsley New Hall. The setting embraces a formerly grand, but now derelict, Victorian garden on south facing steeply terraced slopes looking across a lake and the site for a future championship golf course straddling the Bridgewater Canal. There were some fantastic features in all six of the schemes presented but in the end the jury agreed unanimously that Allies & Morrison had made the most of the garden setting and struck a unique balance between an efficient hotel layout and the intimate feel of a luxurious country house."
images already look dated and its not been built yet… a far cry from the trafford centre architecture!

this look like a 1970’s office block! a right carbuncle and a travesty for Worsley.

A far cry from the Trafford Centre! No wonder why that consumer center is so out dated its hilarious! The Trafford Centre is perhaps one of the single worst examples of architecture in the entire UK if not Europe. The Allies and Morrison building is so grounded in the good architecture of this country its unreal. Its a complete contextual win. I mean what cultural reference does a Greek column on the front of the Trafford Centre have to the average UK man; none. Whereas this design uses human scale materials; the average UK man tends to live in a brick house, as this is made of brick and timber its something he can relate to; a human scale and human palette of materials.

An utterly repulsive insult to the context. Too horizontal, too repetitive, and too much blank plate glass, and that is in a flattering washed out drawing. You create an architectural profession which takes pride in hostility to beauty and this is what wins competitions.

Please ! Why so modern ? Such a shame not to build it as it was . People would come from all over the world to stay there in its former glory

@Simon Leigh – Not a QS/developer I see.. to re-build something like that as it was would be an extreme financial gamble would run into hundreds of millions (would it even then pay for itself?).
I reckon that design looks fine, would you rather a weird multi coloured cladded box with weird windows of different shapes/sizes as is the standard in the centre?
