All systems go for Salford Lads Club repairs
A £438,000 Historic England grant will pay for upgrades to the grade two-listed Ordsall community centre. Plans for the project have been lodged with the city council.
Salford City Mayor Paul Dennett said the cash would ensure the Salford Lads Club, among the most famous buildings in the city, can stay open.
“The club has been at the heart of our city for more than 120 years and has helped guide and support tens of thousands of young people during that time,” he said. “It is now open to young people of all genders, providing everything from boxing and gymnastics to music sessions and arts and crafts.
“We are extremely lucky to have the club based in this great city, and I look forward to the next successful chapter in its history.”
The package of upgrades will include repairs to terracotta copings, replacement of a timber facia, removal of railings, upgrades to hopper outlets, and repainting of the building’s Cupola.
The £438,000 secured from Historic England follows a £100,000 commitment from Salford City Council last year.
Salford Lads Club attracts visitors from across the world and is synonymous with the area’s music scene having featured in album artwork for The Smiths.
It was saved from closure last year having raised £250,000. Former Smiths frontman Morrissey donated £50,000 to the cause.
