Aldi widens scope of Norris Green project

Aldi has applied for planning permission to deliver the second phase of its retail development in Norris Green, Liverpool.

Property consultant JLL has submitted applications on behalf of the retailer which would see additional development taking place in tandem with the construction of the 18,722 sq ft Aldi store at the former Sayer's Bakery site in Lorenzo Drive.

The plans proposed include the creation of two retail terraces containing five units, which will be marketed to other retailers, extension to the car park to include an additional 81 spaces and improved links with the existing district centre. There will be two units in the first terrace, one of 6,000 sq ft and the other of 4,000 sq ft. Three units in the second block will each be 1,250 sq ft, totalling 3,750 sq ft.

The architect is the Harris Partnership and Cameron Rose Associates is the transport consultant. Lamb & Swift are the agents.

Aldi secured planning permission to construct its Norris Green store earlier this year, following strong support from the local community. Development is due to start at the site in the coming weeks with the store scheduled to open before Christmas.

Joanna Gabrilatsou, associate director at JLL, said: "Aldi's market share has grown considerably over the past few years and the retailer is continuing to invest in its store footprint with significant expansion plans for 2014 across the North West.

"Aldi has responded to the strong support from the local community for the first phase of its development by providing additional investment, further job creation and an exciting and comprehensive scheme, complementing the existing retail offer at Broadway District Centre. Developing the two phases of the scheme at the same time will result in the full site being able to operate without any further construction phases and minimising additional disruption to residents."

Aldi is also investing elsewhere in Merseyside and is currently on site at Gateacre where it is building a new neighbourhood shopping centre, due to open in early summer, and at Fazakerley on a former pub site.
