Aldi anchors phase two of Eden Square

Discount supermarket Aldi is taking a 16,000 sq ft premises in phase two of Ask Developments' Eden Square project in Urmston town centre.

Trafford Council approved Ask's revised plans for the second phase of the retail and residential development last October and work on site is expected to commence in summer.

Leon Guyett, development director at Ask Developments, said: "We have been in dialogue with Aldi for some time and have worked together to adapt the plans in order to accommodate the supermarket into the scheme."

An Aldi spokesperson added: "We are pleased to announce the plans for a new store in Urmston as part of our ongoing expansion plans within the UK. We will be looking to create several positions within the store and will begin a local recruitment campaign as the opening date nears."

Ask revised plans for phase two of Eden Square in order to respond to current economic conditions and negotiations with a number of retailers which require larger stores than can be accommodated in phase one.

The number of residential units was reduced to 12 from 80 and the retail, of 42,000 sq ft has been reconfigured to allow for larger floorplates.

Ask said two of the remaining three larger units are in advanced stages of negotiation, and the progress made on phase two of the development has encouraged renewed interest in phase one.

Retailers already operating in phase one include Costa Coffee, Thorntons, Boots, Greggs, Hallmark, HD Studio and William Hill.

Savills and Tushingham Moore are joint letting agents on the scheme. Property consultant Drivers Jonas Deloitte acted as planning consultants.
