Council submits Manchester academy school proposal
Plans are in for an 85,000 sq ft free school to be built in Rusholme, known as Manchester Enterprise Academy Central, which would create 1,050 new school places for 11-16 year olds.
Manchester City Council has submitted the application for the free school to be built on an eight-acre site at Lytham Road, which is currently disused playing fields formerly used by the University of Manchester.
Designed by Ellis Williams Architects, the academy will be a three-storey building, in a horseshoe shape around a central courtyard.
Laing O’Rourke is the main contractor, and Turley the planner.
The development includes sports halls and sports pitches, which will also be open for community use at evenings and weekends.
Altius Trust has been selected as the provider of the Academy. Altius also operates a school in Wythenshawe.
