DfT hands £18m to low carbon projects

The North West will benefit from four local transport schemes aimed at cutting carbon emissions.
The projects were awarded the cash by the Department for Transport as part of the second allocation from the Local Sustainable Transport Fund. The projects were among 30 successful bids receiving funding across England.
The successful North West bids were:
- Growing Smarter Travel Choices in Crewe will receive £3.5m to improve sustainable travel choices for those living and working in Crewe
- Connect to Jobs – Cheshire West & Chester, will receive £4.6m to make walking, cycling and public transport more attractive options for commuters in the area
- Lancashire's Targeting Key Growth Corridors will receive £5m to remove barriers to walking and cycling as well as work with businesses, schools and universities to make staff and students more aware of the travel options available to them
- Warrington Sustainable Travel Triangle will receive £4.7m to connect expanding residential and employment areas with a new direct bus service and improve access to cycling with new cycle routes and a cycle hire scheme
All the schemes are also receiving contributions from the local council or the private sector. In total, £113m was provided by DfT.
