Wirral revisits golf resort plans

Wirral Council has again mooted the idea of developing an international golf resort in Hoylake, host to the Ricoh Women's British Open at the weekend.

The Royal Liverpool Golf Club hosted the competition for the first time and Wirral Council used the occasion to issue a call to developers interested in creating 'a high quality, world-class facility with an international reputation.'

The idea has been floated several times before in previous years but to date nothing has been built. The last major search, launched at MIPIM in 2008, failed to find a partner.

Cllr Ann McLachlan, deputy leader of Wirral Council, said: "Tourism plays a major part in Wirral's economy and it is growing. This growth has been aided by an improvement in the quality of our tourism businesses, particularly since we hosted The Open Championship in 2006 and we believe the time is now right to speak to potential developers who would be interested in taking our tourism offer to another level with the development of a high quality golf resort. The land we have earmarked near Hoylake through a Capita Symonds feasibility study sits in large part within council ownership and although this is just a vision at present, we would like to find out what interest there is 'out there' to bring a project of this scale forward.

"Wirral hosted the most successful Open ever held in England in 2006 and we are once again experiencing another fantastic boost to our economy as thousands of spectators join us to watch the world's best women golfers compete at the Ricoh Women's British Open. Wirral offers a unique experience of English golf at its historic best and we believe golf tourism in Wirral can have an even more exciting future."
