Wigan signs off college revamp

Prepare to say goodbye to Wigan & Leigh College’s 69,000 sq ft arts block, which is set to be demolished to make way for a new 116,000 sq ft facility.

Wigan Council has approved the revamp of the college’s Parson’s Walk Campus, which will see a three-storey teaching block created with labs, classrooms, IT suites, and a ground-floor restaurant. The building will be designed to be energy efficient and will have solar panels.

After the construction of the new college building is completed, two other buildings on the Parson’s Walk Campus will meet the wrecking ball – the 112,200 sq ft main building and a tower block.

Altogether, the new college building will have the capacity for 1,500 students and 250 full-time staff.

In getting a new building, however, the college will lose nearly 100 car parking spaces, going from 237 spots to 139.

Willmott Dixon Construction is lined up to deliver the scheme, which has been designed by Bond Bryan. The project team also includes Turley, OFR, Tace, Pace Consult, EVR Consulting, Roscoe, and Pinnacle Furniture.
