Wigan approves next stage of colliery redevelopment
The Brookhouse Group has been granted outline planning permission for 209 homes in Leigh, near Wigan, on the former Parsonage Colliery.
Savills advised Cheshire-based Brookhouse on the planning application. The houses will be built by Lancet Homes.
Planning permission has previously been granted to open up and connect Parsonage Colliery with the surrounding area. The residential development is the latest phase in a mixed-use scheme which Brookhouse has been delivering on the site, including a business park, medical centre, food store, and public realm.
Mike Nuttall, group property director at the Brookhouse Group, said: “The delivery of residential development on the land at Westleigh Brook is a key component to our mixed use regeneration of the former Parsonage Colliery.
“We have already successfully delivered a new Sainsbury’s superstore and Marks & Spencer outlet at the site which has enhanced the shopping offer of Leigh and further economic development is proposed. This demonstrates our ongoing commitment to the enhancement of Leigh.”
Lets hope there’s a suitable acknowledgement of the millions of man hours that were toiled in this pit, of which its shafts to the Arley mine were the deepest in the country. God it must have been grim down there; God what a debt we owe…….
